US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska on 15 August to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin confirmed.
The location was chosen for its proximity to Russia, with a possible follow-up summit in Moscow.
The announcement came hours after Trump suggested Ukraine might need to cede some territory, hinting at a potential swap that could see Russia keep Crimea and the Donbas region while returning Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
CBS News reports the White House is urging European leaders to support the proposal, which mirrors a recent offer Putin reportedly made to Trumpโs envoy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected any territorial concessions, and it is unclear if Kyiv or its allies would accept such a deal.
Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukraine, with the war stalemated after failed peace talks.
Trump expressed optimism for a trilateral peace agreement, saying all sides โwant to see peace.โ The meeting comes as his August 8 ceasefire deadline for Russia passed without new sanctions being announced.
This will be the first Trump-Putin meeting since Russiaโs full-scale invasion began in 2022.
