A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Turkeyโs north-western Balikesir province on Sunday evening, killing one person and injuring 29 others.
The tremor struck at 19:53 local time (16:53 GMT) with its epicentre in the town of Sindirgi, where 16 buildings collapsed.
An 81-year-old woman died shortly after being rescued from the rubble, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.
The quake was felt as far as Istanbul. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences and vowed close monitoring of recovery efforts.
Search and rescue operations have concluded, with no further casualties reported, though images show significant destruction in Sindirgi.
Turkey, situated at the meeting point of three tectonic plates, is highly prone to earthquakes.
In February 2023, a 7.8 magnitude quake killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and 5,000 in neighbouring Syria.
