Israeli forces have killed Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, after a year-long search following his involvement in planning the 7 October attacks.

Sinwar, 61, had been hiding in Gaza’s underground tunnels, surrounded by a small group of bodyguards.

Despite using hostages as human shields during his time in hiding, no hostages were found with him when he was killed in a chance encounter with Israeli troops during a patrol in Rafah, southern Gaza.

Israeli soldiers from the 828th Bislamach Brigade engaged three militants during their patrol, and later discovered that one of the bodies resembled Sinwar.

DNA testing confirmed his identity, and his body was removed after ensuring the area was safe. Sinwar was reportedly moving alone when he was located and killed by a drone.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that Sinwar died while fleeing, not as a leader, and his death sends a message to Israel’s enemies.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that while Sinwar’s elimination is a significant achievement, it does not mark the end of the war.

Israel will continue its efforts to rescue more than 100 hostages still held by Hamas.

This incident represents a major victory for Israel, but Israeli forces have vowed to continue their operations in Gaza until all their objectives, including the safe return of hostages, are achieved.
