On December 12, 2024, President Joe Biden issued clemency to over 1,500 individuals, marking the largest single-day act of clemency in modern U.S. history.

This included the commutation of sentences for those on home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic and pardons for 39 individuals convicted of nonviolent crimes.

The pardons focused on those who demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation, such as veterans and community leaders.

The move follows criticism over Bidenโ€™s earlier pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, and comes amid calls for broader criminal justice reform.

Advocates have praised the action but continue to urge for more systemic reforms to address harsh sentencing laws.
