Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has been ousted by the country’s ruling council just six months into his term.
Conille, who was appointed to address Haiti’s gang-led security crisis and prepare for elections, called the move unconstitutional, as only parliament has the authority to remove a prime minister.
The Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), formed in April after gangs forced former PM Ariel Henry from office, appointed Alix Didier Fils-Aime as Conille’s successor.
Haiti is in a severe crisis with no sitting president or parliament, rampant gang violence, and massive displacement.
According to the UN, 3,600 people have been killed this year, and nearly half the population faces food shortages.
Gang leader Jimmy Chérizier has offered to cease violence if armed groups can join government discussions.
Meanwhile, Kenyan police officers have been deployed to help manage the escalating situation, with more reinforcements expected in November.
