Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases, has several causes.

These factors are generally classified into genetic, environmental, and lifestyle influences.

Most notably, amyloid is strongly linked as a major cause of Alzheimer’s.

Amyloid plaques disrupt the normal communication between neurons, which is critical for all brain functions, including memory, thinking, and behavior.

Recently, one of the most significant developments is the approval of Kisunla by the FDA in July 2024.

This drug targets amyloid plaques in the brain and has been shown to slow cognitive decline by 35%, with even better results if administered early in the disease.

However, it does come with potential side effects, including amyloid-related imaging abnormalities.

This development represents a significant step forward but also highlights the need for early diagnosis and careful management due to the complexity and risks involved with these treatments.
